In the medical industry, non-woven fabrics are used to make surgical gowns, masks, and disinfectant cloths. Its lightness, comfort, and antibacterial properties make nonwoven fabric an indispensable part of many medical supplies.
Medical nonwoven fabrics are mainly composed of 3-5 layers of nonwoven fabric, namely SMS or SMMMS combination. The important one is the barrier layer, which is the meltblown nonwoven fabric layer M (Meltblown). The fiber diameter of this layer is relatively fine, ranging from 2 to 3 µ m. It plays a crucial role in preventing the infiltration of bacteria and blood.
Issues to consider in the use of nonwoven fabrics:
1. Insufficient weight: The weight of non-woven fabrics can directly affect the weight of customers' products, which may be caused by uneven layering during the mesh laying process and failure to accurately connect the two ends.
2. Uneven thickness: The uneven thickness of non-woven fabrics is also caused by uneven laying of fiber cotton during carding and mesh laying, insufficient technical experience, and inaccurate equipment.
3. Antistatic properties: Nonwoven fabrics with static electricity are prone to adhesion, which seriously affects subsequent processing or affects their wearing and usage performance. After high-temperature sterilization, the internal results of medical packaging non-woven fabrics may change, affecting the penetration and antibacterial properties of the sterilization medium. Therefore, medical nonwoven fabric should not be reused for sterilization. The changes in the performance of various parameters before and after sterilization of medical packaging non-woven fabrics are extremely important for their antibacterial properties.
Selection criteria for medical sterilized non-woven fabrics:
1. Nonwoven fabrics are divided into the S layer and the M layer, and their antibacterial performance mainly depends on the M layer, which ensures the mechanical strength of the nonwoven fabric. For nonwoven fabrics of the same weight, the more M-layers there are, the more protection against bacteria, and the more S-layers there are the greater the mechanical strength. General manufacturers' non-woven fabrics increase the thickness of the S layer (usually 30g) and reduce the weight of the M layer (usually 20g) to ensure strength and a thicker feel. When using them, products that can ensure antibacterial effects should be selected first.
2. Conduct sterilization testing. After sterilization, the hand feel of nonwoven fabrics from general manufacturers is relatively hard, because the high temperature causes the internal fibers of the non-woven fabric to melt, reducing the number of fiber layers after melting, shortening the entry path of bacteria, and reducing the antibacterial performance.
3. Check the appearance, weigh the weight, and test the feel. The appearance of the high-quality nonwoven fabric is free of cloud-like spots, dead threads, etc. The surface is flat and smooth, with a soft feel, and a weighing error of 3g.
4. Quality standard requirements for medical nonwoven fabrics: Medical nonwoven fabric used for sterilization of final packaging materials of medical devices should comply with the specifications of GB/T 19633 and YY/T 0698.2.
5. Special non-woven fabrics should be used for hydrogen peroxide low-temperature plasma, and medical nonwoven fabrics containing plant fibers cannot be used, as plant fibers will absorb hydrogen peroxide.
